Meng-Kong Tham served as the Music Director and Conductor of the YSDP Symphony Orchestra from 1977 to 2016. Mr. Tham received his musical education at the Normal University of Taiwan and Northwestern University.
Mr. Tham was Assistant Conductor of Chicago’s Civic Orchestra for 12 years, and a faculty member at DePaul University’s School of Music for 30 years. He has conducted the Grant Park Symphony, the Elmhurst Symphony, and the Evanston Symphony. In the summers of 2006 and 2007, Mr. Tham served as Music Director of the Silk Music Camp in Lisle, Illinois.
In 1995 and 2012, Mr. Tham and the YSDP Symphony Orchestra were invited to perform at Symphony Center in Chicago, IL The all Chinese music programs were sponsored by the Yellow River Performing Arts. The 2012 concert included a performance with the 200 members of the SYGQ Chorus.
Mr. Tham’s interest in and knowledge of the music of many cultures and periods is reflected in the repertoire learned and performed by Youth Symphony of DuPage’s musicians. His love of teaching young musicians and challenging us to achieve is clearly demonstrated by our musical teamwork and the wonderful quality of our music.
